A New Hampshire business has reported that someone was able to drain thousands of dollars from its bank account after its mail was stolen.Bodo Wallem, general manager of Brentwood Surplus Sales, said someone was able to copy the business’s checks after stealing them from its warehouse mailbox. The company won’t be held liable for the roughly $12,000 that was withdrawn, but Wallem said the theft is still creating lots of problems. “The bank suffers, the taxpayers suffer, and there is a group of individuals who are doing this professionally,” he said.Wallem said the business is no longer relying on its mailbox and is instead taking deliveries at the local post office.Several police departments, including Hooksett’s and Goffstown’s, are looking into reports of someone trying to cash the checks at local branches. Greg Lambert, owner of Brentwood Surplus Sales, said other businesses should closely watch their own accounts and mailboxes. “Check your mail every day and make sure if the flag has not been taken down, make sure the mail is out of there for that day,” he said. “I wouldn’t leave it in there overnight.”
